Look After Your Hearing

Don't Damage Your Hearing!

According to the Journal of Medicine a shocking 20% of adolescents have a hearing loss!  This isn’t directly linked to more babies being born with a hearing loss, but is actually as a result of lifestyle.

So often you will be sat on the bus or walking down the street and see people with headphones that are blaring out, or go for a “quiet” drink somewhere that is actually very noisy indeed! Even activities such as mowing the lawn or doing a bit of DIY  all add up to a great deal of wear and tear on our poor ears!  I even saw a report around Christmas time showing a list of popular Christmas toys for children that were so loud that they could damage their hearing!  Exposure to sounds above 85dB can cause hearing loss.

The cochlear is the organ of hearing and inside the cochlear there are thousands of tiny hair cells  – these hair cells are what enable us to hear, and they move in response to sounds.  When we are exposed to loud sounds, the cells are distorted and can swell up. This is why sometimes after being somewhere noisy your hearing can feel a little dull – this is called a temporary threshold shift, and as the name would suggest – luckily it isn’t always long lasting.  However if the sound is sufficiently loud, or you are in a noisy place for a longer period of time the cells can become so distorted that they don’t return to their normal shape or they pop meaning that your hearing is permanently affected

The unfortunate thing with hearing loss is that you don’t notice it until its too late!

Look after your ears! If you are in a noisy place or doing a noisy job, wear ear protection.  There is even ear protection available that lets you hear people talking when you wear it and just attenuates the very loud sounds.

At Edinburgh Hearing Practice, we can test your hearing and check your ears to make sure that they are healthy and also fit you with hearing protection to help you look after your hearing.
