Outstanding Hearing Devices

Phonak are recognised internationally as one of the premium hearing aid manufacturers, and they consistently work to improve their technology. We have a long history of experience with the brand and our customers are consistenetly impressed with the quality of the instruments and the benefit that their solutions provide. Phonak is one of the primary hearing device brands we use because we trust their quality and reliability implicitly.

In late 2015 they launched their latest generation of hearing aid technology with the ‘Venture’ platform. This was their innovative new sound processing chip technology which replaced their previous ‘Quest’ chip. It has led to a number of new features and binaural capability in the majority of their models. Just recently they have launched a brand new rechargeable hearing aid range, the Audeo B-R. which is built on the new Belong range. The Belong range is a successor to the Venture range and it is expected that the other form factors such as Virto and Bolero will be launched in 2017. Let's take a look at what Phonak hearing instruments have to offer.

Meet The Brand New Audeo Marvel

Phonak Made For Any Phone

Phonak have just introduced their latest hearing aid platform which they are calling the Marvel. It is their latest range of Made For Any Phone hearing aids. The devices will be available from November 22nd 2019 and they truly look amazing.

Phonak Audeo Marvel

Phonak

Audeo Marvel

This is the first part of the Marvel platform, the first to be introduced will be the Audeo (their Receiver In Canal devices) is the first to be introduced. The Marvel Audeo family will be made up of five hearing aids of which two will be rechargeable. The smallest traditional Zinc Air battery size will be the 312. The hearing aids will not all be available initially, below you can see a quick explanation of the devices and their availability. The devices will be available in four levels of hearing aid technology as you would expect from Phonak. The rechargeable devices will be available at every level of technology for the first time.

While Made For iPhone hearing aids are well established, Phonak decided to go a different way with their mobile phone connectivity. They chose one that would give them a direct connection to any mobile phone. Phonak relied on the traditional Bluetooth protocol, which offered huge benefits. It meant that any hearing aid they produced would be technically able to connect to any Bluetooth enabled device, not just phones. That strategy also presented real technical difficulties. The first Made For Any Phone hearing devices did not offer stereo audio streaming of phone calls or any other audio. It also ensured that Phonak's quite famous ear to ear features did not work.

A New System, No Limits

The new Marvel platform does not have any of those limitations. The Marvel will allow users to experience stereo streaming audio from any Bluetooth enabled device, that includes most mobile phones available, computers, even some modern TVs. Marvel users can have that audio streaming with the full benefits of Phonak's ear to ear features (Binaural Voice Streaming Technology BVST for short). That all means an outstanding new hearing aid platform with no limitations.

Multi-functional and Feature Rich Hearing Aids

These hearing devices are hugely multi-functional and feature-rich. The Marvel contains probably every single one of the current headline features in the hearing aid world, and they have even thrown in some new ones, here’s the quick list:

  • Stereo Bluetooth streaming: Stereo streaming from any Bluetooth enabled device, that means iPhone, iPad, laptops, computers, Macs, Android phones, Windows phones, hell any Bluetooth-enabled phone.
  • Real Hands-free calling in stereo: Like the Audeo B-direct, the Marvel offers true hands-free calling from Bluetooth-enabled phones and VOIP services like Skype, except, to both hearing aids.
  • TV Streaming: Marvel can stream directly from Bluetooth-enabled TVs, and can also stream from the Phonak TV Connector accessory.
  • Rechargeability: They say both Marvel rechargeables will deliver a full day of hearing aid use from a single charge.
  • Remote adjustments: Marvel hearing aids can be adjusted remotely by your hearing expert.
  • New App Eco-System: Brand new apps to make life easier and engage the consumer in the process.
  • RogerDirect: This is really fascinating, for the first time, users will be able to stream from Roger devices directly to their hearing aids.
  • Full Phonak Feature Set: The Marvel will offer full and up to date inter-ear features.

More Than Just Audio Connection

The Bluetooth connection is being used for more than just audio streaming though. They will also use that same connection for data exchange between the mobile phone and the hearing aids. This ability offers much more benefits for consumers and professionals alike. The data exchange is the core of the new ability to remotely fine tune the hearing aids in real time and for the user to give real-time day to day feedback with the new Hearing Diary.

Remote Fine Tuning

The new remote fine-tuning system is excellent, a video calling system gives the same feeling of face to face interaction, just in a different way. While the remote support may not be for everyone, I think it will be welcomed by people who see it as a real alternative to in-clinic appointments

Speech To Text

They have also introduced a new speech to text app with the new products. The new app acts as a transcription system which allows users to read what is being said by the person on the other end of the phone. It works in real time and thanks to hands-free phone calling you can carry on the conversation while you read the dialogue. The app will allow people with hearing loss extra help to understand people on their mobile phone.

RogerDirect Coming

Phonak's Roger system is the Gold Standard in FM assistive devices for people with hearing loss. All Marvel hearing aids will be able to be upgraded in late 2019 by hearing care professionals so that the new RogerDirect™ system can be added to the hearing aids allowing Roger microphone equipment to stream directly to Marvel hearing aids without having to attach an external receiver. That is something special and it will provide even better benefit for people in complex sound environments.

Stereo Bluetooth streaming

Marvel will directly stream stereo audio from any device capable of streaming audio via Bluetooth. This includes almost any device you can think of. You can connect it directly to your Android phone; you can connect it directly to your Mac Book or Windows laptop. You can even connect it directly to any Bluetooth enabled television. That is pretty amazing, that is a direct connection without any streamer. The quality of streaming audio is excellent; audio is full and clear. Music is warm and full, and phone calls are clear.

True Hands-Free Calling

The Marvel delivers true hands-free calling in stereo. You will hear your phone calls in both ears giving you a better chance at understanding what is being said. Hands-free means you don't need to touch your phone. Your phone can be up to thirty feet away. You simply hit the button on your hearing aid to answer the call.

Versatile TV Streaming

Phonak TV Connector

While the Marvel hearing aids will connect directly to Bluetooth enabled TVs, Phonak have also introduced a new TV Streamer. The TV streamer allows low energy streaming offering great audio and reduced battery usage.

Fully Featured Hearing Aids

As I said, these hearing aids aren't de-featured in any way. They include all of the latest Phonak features including their much-celebrated ear to ear features. They also have a brand new sound management system called Autosense 3.0 which recognises and automatically adapts to precisely match more listening situations than ever before. Autosense 3.0 also classifies streamed signals and will adapt how it works to better help you to hear the way you should.

Meet The Audeo B-Direct

Phonak Made For iPhone

Phonak have just introduced their very first Made For iPhone hearing aid. However, it is more than Made For iPhone. In fact, it is a Made For Any Phone hearing aid. The devices will be available from September in the United Kningdom.

Audeo B-Direct hearing aid

Phonak

Audeo B-Direct

Phonak Delivers Made For Any Phone

The device is called the Audeo B-Direct. Unlike any other hearing aid on the market, the Audeo B-Direct connects to any Bluetooth® enabled mobile phone, directly without a streamer. Even better, it offers true hands free calling. As it supports the classic Bluetooth protocol, it provides direct connectivity to cell phones – including AndroidTM, iPhone® and even classic cell phones – with no extra body-worn streaming device required.

True hands-free calling is now a reality

The hearing aids offer real hands-free voice calling. The wearer can answer or reject a phone call by simply pressing the push button on their hearing aid. The ringing of the phone is heard through the hearing aids and once the call is accepted, the conversation is instantly streamed. You don’t even need to pick up your phone. Your voice is picked up by the hearing aid’s intelligent microphone network and transmitted to the other caller similar to a wireless headset.

No Music Streaming

Unfortunately for people who like to stream music or audio books from their phone, this hearing device isn't the answer. While it delivers astonishing new power over mobile phone calls, it doesn't allow the type of streaming that delivers music or other audio. However, they have thought about music lovers and your TV viewing habits.

Hearing aids that double as a wireless TV headphones

They have also introduced an accompanying TV Connector, which uses their proprietary AirStreamTM technology. It is designed to be a state-of-the-art compact multimedia hub that seamlessly connects wearers to their favorite TV programming for an immersive audio experience. It’s a plug and play solution that automatically turns a pair of Audéo B-Direct hearing aids into wireless TV headphones. The TV Connector can also connect and transmit to multiple sets of Audéo B-Direct hearing aids simultaneously. That’s a pretty good solution for couples with hearing loss.

TV Connecter

Delivering direct streaming to an underserved group

Android is the pre-dominant player in the smart phone market with an estimated four out of every five smartphones being Android. The Audéo B-Direct will now bring direct streaming to this neglected market while also providing compatibility with Apple’s iPhone. More than that though, the new solution allows users who own a classic cell phone to avail of direct streaming as well.

The device is a receiver in canal (RIC) hearing aid which means that it will be suitable for a wide range of hearing losses and users. It is also the first device to make use of Sonova’s revolutionary SWORD chip and wireless radio technology. They say that the low-voltage radio chip has the lowest power consumption of any hearing aid using Bluetooth Classic.

The device uses a size thirteen battery and Phonak reports some excellent battery life figures. They say that the battery should last for six days with one hour of phone use and 3 hours of TV per day. That isn’t bad, I would say though real world experience will vary, some people like to talk more and watch a lot more TV. Even though the device is a size thirteen, it isn't actually much bigger than their Audeo B 312.

Three levels of technology

Audeo B-DirectThe new device will be available in three levels of technology, the 90, the 70 and the 50, so no entry level device this time around. Although that was to be expected based on the introduction of the rechargeable devices.

New Accompanying App

There is a new app to go with the devices for smart phones; the app offers the typical features you would expect.

Volume adjustment, programme changes, you can also rename the programmes to make them easier to remember. The app will show a list of the available audio sources and allow the user to control the balance of audio when streaming.

Phonak

Virto B Hearing Aids

Meet The New Phonak Virto B Range

Phonak have now introduced the full range of their new Virto B in the ear products. They say that they are custom-made to perfectly fit in your ear, Phonak Virto B are the world’s first hearing aids with Biometric Calibration, which take your individual ear anatomy and hearing needs into account. That's an interesting description.

They say that they will identify over 1600 biometric data points in and on your ear, and the unique calibration settings are calculated for each Virto B hearing aid. In this way, Virto B is able to more reliably sense where sound is coming from, thereby giving you access to better hearing performance.

What does that all mean? Well, we think that Phonak are the first ever hearing aid manufacturer to carefully map the outer ear to take advantage of its natural abilities. They say that the new process will deliver a 2dB signal to noise ratio improvement. Basically means it will make the signal (what you want to listen to) 2dB higher than the noise.

2dB doesn't sound like much, but combined with all the other strategies that Phonak use it will be a marked improvement. Phonak Virto B is available in six models to match your hearing needs. It is also available in the usual four levels of technology, the 90, 70, 50 and 30.

Virto B-Titanium Invisible Hearing Aids

As part of a raft of introductions Phonak announced that they were introducing a new Virto hearing aid type as part of their Virto Belong range. The device is quite groundbreaking, it is the first hearing aid device to use medical grade titanium to form the custom shell. While this alone is innovative, they have used the properties of the metal to ensure that they can offer discreet custom hearing aids to more people than ever.

Virto B-Titanium

A Titanium Shell

The named the hearing aid as the Virto B-Titanium and said it will be the most discreet in ear device they have ever made. It is a fascinating device that uses titanium for the shell instead of the usual hard acrylic. This is the first time that titanium has been used in the manufacture of a custom hearing aid.

Super discreet

Virto B-Titanium is the smallest Phonak in-the-ear hearing aid ever! It is for all intent and purpose an invisible hearing aid device.

Half as Thin

Using titanium allows for a shell that’s half as thin as traditional custom shells. This will result in a deep, comfortable fit. Phonak say that the overall size is reduced significantly, thus increasing invisible-in-the-canal (IIC) fit rate by 64%. That simply means that more people than ever will be physically suitable for their latest invisible hearing aid.

Three Levels of Receiver

The device comes available with three levels of receiver which allows it to cover even more hearing losses than ever before. Because of the use of Titanium, it also allows for bigger vents in their hearing aids which means less occlussion problems for people with good low frequency hearing.

Fully automatic

Virto B-Titanium features AutoSense OS™. It adapts to every sound environment automatically for excellent hearing performance everywhere. There will be no need to manually adjust the hearing aids. Although, they can come with an optional push button for just that.

Technology Levels

The Virto B-Titanium will only be available in the 90 and the 70 levels of technology.

Will Fit More People Than Ever

The material is exceptionally strong, which allows Phonak to make the shell much thinner than ever before with even more strength. This combined with new component design allows them to deliver an invisible hearing device that they say will fit 68% more ears.

The deep position in the ear canal of the device will allow the hearing aid to use the natural shape of the ear to funnel sound to the microphone. This strategy has always proved to deliver excellent directional hearing.

Who will the Virto Belong-Titanium be suitable for?

While invisible hearing aids can be a bit hit and miss for suitability, Phonak say that their new designs and materials will in fact make the hearing aids suitable for more people than ever. While that will most definitely be the case, there will still be some limitations on ability to fit. I would imagine if the bends in the ear canal are too tight, it will preclude this device from being suitable.

Other contra indications are the same as every other invisible hearing aid such as excessive waxy ear canals, history of mid ear infections or perforated eardrums. If you face these issues, this will not be the product for you. In these cases other discreet hearing aids may be more advisable to consider.

Phonak

Bolero Belong Hearing Devices

With the launch of the new Bolero Belong platform of BTE hearing aids, Phonak have launched the anticipated lithium-ion rechargeable BTE, the Bolero B-PR. It is the first Lithium-ion rechargeable BTE to the market and the first rechargeable BTE for Phonak. They say that ithe battery pack will deliver 24 hours of hearing with one simple charge (expected results when fully charged, and up to 80 minutes wireless streaming time) which is in line with the performance of the Audeo B-R.

Phonak Bolero Belong P-R Rechargeable behind the ear hearing aid

The P hearing aid style is quite a powerful aid and can be expected to be fitted to people with severe hearing loss. The device has a programme button, volume control and a telecoil onboard. The amplification output of this aid demands a lot of power, so Phonak must be very confident with the battery technology.

In line with the Audeo Belong, the range will run on the new improved AutoSense OS and will come in the usual four levels of technology. However, the new rechargeable option will not be available in the lowest level of technology.

The Range

The Bolero range, as always, will be a full model line up with four Bolero B models. They will include B-M, B-P, B-SP, and the rechargeable B-PR.

Bolero Belong MPhonak Bolero B-M

The B-M model is the smallest of the range, a micro BTE powered with a 312 battery it will cover Moderate to Severe hearing losses. The device comes with a programme button and has an onboard telecoil.

The device can be fitted with a thin tube fitting or a traditional tube and  mould configuration. The device will be available in the four levels of technology, the 90, the 70, the 50 and the 30.

Bolero Belong PPhonak Bolero B-P

The B-P model is slightly larger, it is powered by a 13 battery cell and comes with a programme button, volume control, telecoil and will cover up to severe hearing losses.

The device can be fitted with a thin tube fitting or a traditional tube and  mould configuration. The device will be available in the four levels of technology, the 90, the 70, the 50 and the 30.

Bolero B-SP

The B-SP is the largest model, again it is powered by a 13 battery and comes with a programme button, volume control and telecoil. The device will cover severe to profound hearing losses.

The device can be fitted with a thin tube fitting or a traditional tube and  mould configuration. The device will be available in the four levels of technology, the 90, the 70, the 50 and the 30.

It also has a programme button, volume control and telecoil. The device can be fitted with a thin tube fitting or a traditional tube and  mould configuration. The Audeo Belong Hearing Aid Range

A Chance to Free yourself from the hassles of disposable batteries

Audeo B-R Rechargeable hearing aids

The Audeo B-R is big news, it is part of the new Audeo Belong range and Phonak have created it to simplify your life, offering you a chance to free yourself from the hassles of changing batteries. They have introduced a groundbreaking built-in lithium-ion battery technology that will offer you 24 hours of better hearing between charges.

Audeo B-R hearing aids in CaseGround Breaking Tech

Phonak rechargeable hearing aids are the first to feature a specifically designed built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery that provides 24 hours of hearing with one simple charge. With 40% more power than conventional rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion is reliable and capable of supporting the superior technology and performance of Phonak rechargeable hearing aids. Now you can enjoy the freedom and confidence of knowing that your Phonak rechargeable hearing aids are conveniently charged and ready to take you through long days...and nights, if necessary.

Designed to suit you

Quick charging and long lasting, in fact three hours of charging will give you 24 hours uninterrupted listening. With its easy to use case, optional stand alone power pack and small desk top charger, the Audeo B-R is designed with the user in mind. But there is much more than just that to the new Belong range.

What's new in the Audeo Belong Range?

The Audeo Belong hearing aid range comes with the fantastic new rechargeable option, an upgraded operating system, the latest version of Phonak's Sound Recover 2 and new and improved microphones and programme button. The Belong is based on the same microchip as the Venture hearing aids, but the new features and upgrades make them an advancement on the venture instruments. The Belong range is available in a 90, 70, 50 and 30 level of technology, however, the rechargaeable option is not available in the 30 level.

New Autosense OS

The operating system in the Belong range is still called Autosense OS as it is in the Venture models, however, they have improved upon the original with tweaks that make quite a difference to how it works. Phonak undertakes constant research on how their features work in the real world and they have been doing so with Autosense since it was first introduced.

That research has allowed them to change the parameters on the operating system, which has allowed them to deliver even better speech intelligibility in all of the situations you face. It also has a new way to deal with soft speech which delivers better soft speech intelligibility.

The Phonak Audeo Belong Range
Audeo Belong Range

SoundRecover2

SoundRecover2 is a feature that moves high frequency sounds in speech like the t and th sound into lower areas of hearing. It works only when needed, for instance if a sound is in an area of hearing where you would have no way of hearing it. While that is a very simple description of what it does, it is quite an accurate one. We sometimes have customers who have high frequency hearing that just does not work any longer or is too damaged to try and amplify for.

In such cases, a normal hearing aid strategy is not what is needed. SoundRecover2 is an excellent feature which allows the user access the sound information they need to understand speech. The new and updated version was first introduced in the new Naida Venture and is adaptive and much better at doing it's job, early feedback from users is that it makes an amazing difference.

Hardware changes

Phonak have introduced a new style of button on the devices which is easier to use and a new microphone system. The microphone system improves the experience of a user immeasurably, it is exceptionally quiet, let me explain why that might matter. All hearing aids produce a low volume sound that is often described as a hiss.

It is caused more often than not by the microphones. It isn't particularly loud but some people with good low frequency hearing can still hear it.  While it is not a major issue, it can be an annoyance. The new microphones in the Belong range make it exceptionally quiet.

The Phonak Audeo Belong Hearing Aid Range

The range itself is a full line Audeo offering, so that is a full range of Receiver in Canal devices. That's five different devices:

Audeo B-10

Very small RIC device using a size 10 battery, it is quite discreet and can be used with several receiver variations meaning it can cover a lot of hearing losses. It doesn't have a telecoil although as always it is a wireless device. It has a button but no volume control.

Audeo B-312

Again a very small RIC device, however, it uses a size 312 battery, it is still very discreet and can be used with several receiver variations meaning it can cover a lot of hearing losses. Like the 10, it doesn't have a telecoil although as always it is a wireless device. It has a button but no volume control.

Audeo B-312T

Slightly bigger than the 312, it is still a small and discrete device RIC which uses a size 312 battery, it can be used with several receiver variations meaning it can cover a lot of hearing losses. Un-like the 10 and the 312, it has a telecoil as well as being a wireless device. It has a button but no volume control.

Audeo B-13

The largest of the Audeo B RIC range, it runs on a size 13 battery and can be used with several receiver variations meaning it can cover a lot of hearing losses. The 13 comes fully loaded with both a telecoil, programme button and a volume control as well as being a wireless device.

Audeo B-R

The RIC device that all the hype has been about, a rechargeable hearing device running on Lithium-ion power. A solid 24 hours of use  from one three hour charge. It can be used with several receiver variations meaning it can cover a lot of hearing losses down to profound. It is also a wireless device with a programme button but no volume control or telecoil.

The launch of the new Audeo Belong range caught us a little by surprise so closely after the Venture introduction, however, it is a welcome addition to the hearing devices we provide, and not just for it's rechargeable option. If you have any questions about the hearing devices please don't hesitate to contact us.

Phonak

Naida Venture Hearing Aids

Phonak is a hearing aid manufacturer that is well known for it's outstanding solutions for severe and profound hearing loss. The Naida V, which is their latest addition, looks like it will continue and build on that legacy.

Phonak have just launched the latest addition to their now famous Naida range. The new Naida V was launched at an event I attended in Dublin last Thursday. The devices are based on the Venture chipset and will bring all of the benefits of that new platform to people with severe and profound hearing loss. The range which will be released on May 1st will be available in four levels of technology which include the V90, V70, V50 and V30.

The new range brings newly designed hearing aid styles with much smaller and more powerful devices than available in the older Naida Quest range. It also packs in some great updated features with new strategies to deliver as much sound information as possible.

Sound Recover 2

With a new version of Phonak's sound Recover strategy the Naida offers more high frequency cues than ever before. This allows access to the nuances of sound that you may not be able to hear.

Water resistant

The range is rated to IP68, which means it will survive immersion in one metre of water for sixty minutes without damage. Phonak are circumspect calling it water resistant, but another manufacturer calls this waterproof. One way or the other this range will quite happily get in the shower and the pool with you.

More robust

The casing is made with a new glass fiber reinforced material, the Naída V is now 60% more robust than its predecessor which together with its resistance to water should really give you confidence it won't fail.

Technology Levels

The newest Super Power hearing aid range from Phonak comes in four technology levels that cover all lifestyles and budgets:

  • Phonak Naida V-90 - Premium: a vast array of advanced features. 20 frequency channels
  • Phonak Naida V-70 - Advanced: but less automatics and speech focus than above. 16 frequency channels
  • Phonak Naida V-50 - Standard: a popular choice for the slightly less needy. 12 frequency channels
  • Phonak Naida V-30 - Essential: some excellent albeit more basic features. 8 frequency channels

Naida V RIC

Naida V RICThe Naida V RIC (Receiver in Canal) offers fantastic power in a small package, it will deliver outstanding benefits for people with mild to severe hearing losses. The device comes with three possible receiver options, the XS, the XP and the newly designed  X UP (for Ultra Power).

With the introduction of a new style X UP receiver, the hearing aid will cover a hearing loss down to a flat 100 dB. This means that even people with a severe hearing loss can avail of a very discreet solution without compromise in power or functionality. However, these are RIC hearing devices and will need extra care and attention. You will need to follow a daily cleaning routine and use a drying kit. This will ensure that you get the best from the device for longer.

Naida V SP

Naida V SPThe new Naida V SP is 25% thinner than its predecessor, it is also a much smaller hearing aid. It runs on a size thirteen battery and can be fit with a power slim tube and tip which offers real discretion. It can also be fitted with a standard thick tube and mould configuration. The power slim tube has been re-designed and it now sits lower on the top of the ear and hugs the face in a better way.

The power slim tube can be fitted with either an acrylic or a silicone custom tip. The power output on the new SP has been increased and it now matches the power output on the older Naida Quest UP. Which simply means that more people with severe to profound hearing loss can now avail of a much more discreet option.

Naida V UP

Naida V UP

The new Naida V UP is again thinner and smaller than its predecessor with a new form factor. The power output on the hearing aid has been increased giving it even more performance for even the most profound hearing loss. It is powered by a 675 battery and can also be fitted with a power slim tube and custom tip. This is definitely the smallest 675 traditional type hearing aid solution for profound hearing loss I have ever seen. It will give people with profound hearing loss a more discreet solution.
